The Mount Chiliad mystery
GTA 5's most famous mystery: the mural on top of Mount Chiliad, the UFO you can see after 100% completion, and the jetpack fans hunted for years. And whether GTA 6 will have its own.
Published
For years, the biggest question in GTA 5 wasn’t a heist. It was a painting on top of a mountain.
The mural
At the top of Mount Chiliad, the tallest mountain in GTA 5, the wall of the cable car station has a mural. It shows:
- a UFO,
- an egg,
- an eye,
- and a jetpack.
No mission points you there and nothing explains it. Players decided it had to be a puzzle, and the Mount Chiliad mystery was born.
The UFO
Part of it is real. After 100% completion, go to the summit at 3 a.m. during a thunderstorm, and a UFO hovers over the mountain.
The jetpack that never came
The jetpack was the big hope. San Andreas had one, the mural shows one, so players searched every corner of the map, decoded symbols and swapped theories for years. No working jetpack was ever found in GTA 5’s story mode.
Whether the mural was always meant as a dead end, or Rockstar planned more and moved on, has never been officially explained. That’s exactly why it became the series’ most famous mystery.
Will GTA 6 have its own Chiliad?
Rockstar loves mysteries (Red Dead Redemption 2 had plenty too), and GTA 6 has a whole state to hide them in, including its own mountain area, Mount Kalaga National Park. Nothing is confirmed yet. When the hunt starts on November 19, every clue goes into our secrets database.
